chess set design
inspiration
this chess set was inspired by the Mortal Engines series of books by Philip Reeve. the books describe a world ruled by "Municipal Darwanism" where mobile cities roam the landscape supported by massive tracks and gigantic wheels. in this world large cities such as london pray on smaller cities for parts and fuel. while I wanted my set to have a steampunk aesthetic I also wanted all of the pieces to remain easily recognisable

On the final pieces
my favorite thing about my chess pieces is that they are still easily recognizable as chess pieces and each type of piece is easily distinguishable from the other pieces. another aspect of the design that I am proud of is that I feel that I have struck a good balance between areas of high detail and areas of lower detail giving a sense of balance to the pieces. one aspect that I could improve on is the shape of the horse head, I feel I could get more definition around the eyes. if I were to make the knight in future I would have taken the model into digital sculpting and worked on it further.
