Define phase

A how might we statement allows a designer to focus their efforts and measure the success of their ideas throughout the rest of the design process. To use a computer science saying, "Garbage in, garbage out," that is, if the design goals are poorly defined and metrics for success are vague, I will be unable to develop a practical final concept.

Brainstorms

To begin distilling the research that I completed in the previous stage of the double diamond design method, I started by brainstorming the various patterns, surprises, and contradictions that I uncovered in my interviews and research. The next thing that I did was develop some initial How might we statements at the outset. This allowed me to begin iterating on the established ideas during my research. I continue to iterate on these statements as I progress through the define stage.

Mind Map

In this mind map, I can associate ideas and systems and identify links between different aspects of painting. Creating these connections means that I can begin to identify underlying trends that contribute to the user's enjoyment and non-enjoyment of various painting related activities

AEIOU chart

In this chart, I investigate the Activities, Environments, Interactions, Objects, and Users involved in the act of painting. this allows me to

Further H.M.W iteration

as I was going through the process of the various brainstorms I was continually iterating on my How Might We statement, attempting to increase its specificity and its descriptiveness.

Final How Might We Statement

"How Might We design a low cost product that helps casual painters pick up and put down painting quickly to allow them to make the best use of their limited free time."
